So as promised here's my book blog. I've been gone for a while now actually but I'm here to stay (hopefully). I haven't done any of these book blogs since about January so about roughly 7 months but enough talk of my hiatus I'll just start with my review.
I'm gonna be honest. This book hit me hard. But I'm going to stop beating around the bush. Winger's about a kid named Ryan Dean West who goes to a boarding school and is a fourteen year old junior at Pine Mountain. He plays winger in rugby (hence the name of the book) and is in love with his best friend Annie who thinks of him as just a friend. Ryan's main friends are JP and Seanie. Seanie's a cynical dark web searching kid who likes posting pictures of his balls on the internet (this is a plot line in the book) and is hard to tell whether he's serious. Then there's JP who in all honesty is an average kid. Not much about him except for the fact that he plays rugby with Ryan Dean and Seanie. However, all of this is not much compared to the (kind of) rogues gallery of Winger, First you have Chas Becker who lives in O-hall (which is where all the bad kids of Pine Mountain go) with Ryan Dean (they're bunk mates) and in all honesty is a pretty terrible guy with not much motivation for his terrible actions. He does know that he's a jerk so, that's cool. Next to Chas we have Casey Palmer who is the worst person in the entire book hands down (for reasons I can't explain) and then Megan who kind of fools around with Ryan Dean in a way they both know is bad but still hurt others in the process. However, I've been going on for the synopsis of this book for a while. So I'll get along with my actual review.
Most of the characters and actions in this book correlate well with each other. For example an angry character will do angry things or a nice character will do nice things etc. Almost all of the characters all follow this except for Ryan Dean and Chas Becker. Now, both of these guys are hot messes but (in my opinion Ryan Dean is a bit worse) Chas seems to have no motivation for bullying Ryan Dean and not everything has to have an intention but it really felt needed for his actions. Overall, all of the characters are understandable. It honestly feels as if they all have a purpose in the story. Every character is woven into the plot in a way that's rarely jarring (except for Ryan Dean when him and Megan have their moments) and it honestly feels as if Andrew Smith has outdone himself on this one (there's a sequel that I may or may not review). And as I really think about it I realize that Ryan Dean is a guy who I kinda dislike but I think that's why I like him in a way. He does a lot of dumb things without knowing why and that kind of hits close to home (since this is something I'm adamant of doing). So great characters, interesting plot, and a book that'll really hit your feels. I'll give this book 4/5 Rowlings. And if you'd like to recommend a book you can comment below. Siah out bye.
I await your Doc Mom...
