Summary:
Fifteen-year-old Benny Flax and Virginia Leeds are the only two members of Mystery Club, an extracurricular group that is sorely lacking in both participants and crimes to solve—until the Friday night football game when cheerleader Brittany, dressed as the school’s mascot, inexplicably runs off the field and jumps off a bridge. The police are quick to rule Brittany’s death a suicide, but Benny and Virginia think differently after they discover camera footage of both the cheerleaders’ locker room and the apparent suicide. With Benny’s keen level of observation and Virginia’s ability to go unnoticed, the two decide to investigate the mystery themselves, even if it means lying to police and breaking the law. Because for Benny and Virginia, Mystery Club is all they have.
Prelude:
I don't know how I feel about this book. I was going to review Hero by Perry Moore but I just finished this yesterday and it's fresh in my mind so I wanted to just do it since I missed a review for October. However, I have an extra one planned for December so it evens itself out. Anyways enough for the backstory I'm going to go into the review.
Review:
As I said above, this book I don't know how to feel about this book. By the way this is definitely not a kid's book. It's not super duper messed up but it definitely has some mature themes that some might not be able to handle. Some of these the things represented in this book is: (minor) drug usage, trafficking rings (child pornography trafficking rings to be specific), suicide, sex (and a weird masturbation session), etc. So it's not for the light-hearted. Anyways, you've already read the summary the book's a whodunit about a cheerleader in a mascot suit who supposedly committed suicide after jumping off a bridge during a football game. Man, this was a wild ride. The side characters are interesting to say the least. Gottfried, Zaire, Mrs. Flax, Rodrigo, Winn, Chrissie, Min-Jun, Choi etc. They're interesting but all incredibly weird. Zaire, I won't spoil anything is my least favorite character in this book. I won't say if it's in narrative or in-story but I don't like her at all. You'll figure out which way if and/or when you read this book. I hated Winn. He was a jerk and the stuff he does is weird. Gottfried's a weird kid but he's not nearly as sinful as most of the other people in this book. Min-Jun and Choi are terrible, terrible people as well. I couldn't stand any second that they were on page but again I won't say if this is because of my personal preference or an in-story action. Mrs. Flax and Rodrigo were off the side characters who don't really have much going on for them. Chrissie (to me at least) is just forgettable. However, Brittany just makes me feel off. Not only that but Angelina has a big question mark at least for me as to why she did some things but now I'm going to get on to the main characters.
I don't like Benny Flax (aka Scooby) and it's sort of the author's and not really. He reminds me of Rick from Rick and Morty and if any of you have watched that show you probably don't like it because of the fandom of "intellectuals." Which I still make fun of to this day (even if it's a dead meme). The whole szechuan sauce debacle makes it worse but anyways, Rick is a character who everyone "relates to" because of how smart and detached from reality he is. It's annoying finding people like this and that's what i feel like with Benny. He thinks he's better than everyone. He kind of is but it gets annoying after awhile. He flexes his ego internally a lot but it gets annoying after a while. And I find his nickname Scooby funny. It's even making me chuckling while writing this. However, he doesn't remain that static of a character throughout the entirety of the book and changes even if it isn't by much. However, right next to Benny is Virginia. I like her better than Scooby. Virginia's annoying yes but it also comes with a certain charm about her. I do understand her obsession with gossip and the fact that she handles it throughout the book makes me feel for her. She's also a bit of a klutz and that doesn't really change much. However, as a duo her and Scooby make a good team. However, a lot goes unresolved in the book (and that's due to there being another book in the series but I'm not sure how much is actually resolved since I haven't read the second book). However, my main gripe with this book definitely has to be how nonchalant a lot of people are. There's a murder in this book and it's being investigated by 2 kids who don't seem to be extremely on edge about it. There comes a point in the climax where the the part when everyone's on edge feels like a joke. Now, this might not be for everyone but I liked it (looking back at it). It was different but also a little too different. Like what should've been an extremely on edge moment became a lot less impactful. However, I can't deny I liked it. But back to my point there's different points when Scooby and Virginia are in the presence of a pedophile and/or murderer and they aren't shaken to their soul. I'm not sure about you but that would definitely leave me on edge. Maybe it's on purpose but it still feels a little odd. However, I haven't seen this at all other than this book so at the end of the day it felt refreshing to have a change of pace. Overall, this book was an enjoyable experience. Certainly one of the most out there enjoyable experiences but in that weird way I like it. To me a good book is one that I don't want to put down unless I absolutely want to. Fortunately, this is one of those books. Thus, I'm going to have to give this book a 4/5 diamonds. I know I've been mainly all gripes on this book but it still left me intrigued about who would do what every time I turned the page. But as always if you have a book suggestion leave a comment and/or email me at siahlegend@gmail.com. Siah out bye.
I await your scooby snacks...
